June 19, 2023 - Transitions

June 19, 2023

As our seasons officially move from spring to summer this week, we at the United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties are experiencing a big transition. As many of you know we are saying farewell to Maureen Nelson, who is retiring. Maureen has steered UWGWP through many seasons during her time as the Executive Director. We know she is looking forward to this next chapter and we wish her well!

Besides a job transition, this is a time of year where transitions are occurring regularly. Students are celebrating the end of a school year and graduates are looking forward to embarking on new journeys. Communities are getting ready to host local festivals and attractions, and businesses are ready to welcome the many visitors that will travel to our region.

With the season’s excitement however, we must remember that some individuals in our communities are experiencing an uncertain future. With school out children and families may experience hunger more often. Several individuals may find themselves without access to stable housing or be forced to find a “home” on the street. Getting necessary health care may be a barrier as well.

Advocating for those that need assistance is something I feel incredibly passionate about and I know plenty of others feel the same way I do. Collectively, with the support of our donors, our community and business partners we will continue to make great strides.

As we look forward and I step into the role of Executive Director, I’m confident we can expand our reach and help more individuals and families as they move through their own season of transitions.

In gratitude,

Nicolle Mechelke

FINAL THOUGHTS FOR TODAY

“For last year's words belong to last year's language

And next year's words await another voice.

And to make an end is to make a beginning."

T.S. Eliot

To all of you who have been faithful readers and all of you who have supported UWGWP over the years I want to say "Thank you." It has been my pleasure to work with and for all of you. It is now Nicolle's turn to steer this organization and I am confident she will give it her all. I am not going far and look forward to beginning a new blog around many of the issues I've tackled over the years and especially the impact they have on women and girls. I'll still be out there, Alexa has my contact information.

Here's to the next chapter for UWGWP. May it be bold, trustworthy and full of positive change!

Thanks for your years of support and encouragement, and for the final time...

Thanks for reading!
