August 29, 2022 - School Supply Thank You

August 29, 2022

YOU DID IT AGAIN!!!  This year our Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive collected over 14,000 items! That's amazing but that is not what is the best part of this project. That is the fact that at our recent distribution event, we provided 184 filled backpacks to students in 94 families, from 8 different school districts within our service area. We have distributed and additional 84 packs since the event and the remaining 30 will be sent directly to schools for use throughout the year

It took 40 volunteers 74 hours to make this happen. We would like to thank all of them with special thanks to Lottie, Stephanie and Karlyne at the Red Wing Elks Lodge and and all of their volunteers, and Laurie Andrews "Volunteer Recruiter Extraordinaire" and her AAUW volunteers. We can't forget our loyal United Way volunteers and all of the retired teachers who join us annually to ensure kids have the tools they need to succeed!

Midwest Dental donated children's dental hygiene kits, Koozie Group and Red Wing Shoe Company donated backpacks and lunch bags, Red Wing Youth Outreach participated by making personal hygiene products available and talking to parents about their mentoring program. The Elks fed sloppy Joe's and chips to participants as well as volunteers and some Red Wing principals attended, even staying to help us pack up.

Two little boys made this event extra special. The first is entering kindergarten this year. He came in wearing new jeans, a red shirt and a Spiderman cap. As he walked along the table to select his backpack he was delighted to find a Spiderman backpack and claimed it quickly. His look of complete joy was infectious. He even stopped by the registration table to say a special thank on his way out, so proud of his new backpack.

The other boy was a little older, going into 3rd grade. He found a green backpack and grabbed it telling me "I love green!" . It was the only green backpack among a lot of red and black bags and I knew that I had personally packed that bag the evening before. I told him to open it and check out what it held within. There he found a green notebook, green folder, green pencil case, green scissor and even a green eraser. He was thrilled! Just those two faces made it all worthwhile and there were many more smiles that followed.

All in all - it was a huge success...AGAIN.. thanks to all of you who donated.

This is a crucial event for many children and it doesn't happen on it's own. You always step up when asked and even though you weren't there to hear the thanks and see the smiles - please know that you have made a difference to a child.

Volunteer Needs

Accessible Community Garden for People with Disabilities

There is a project underway to build an Accessible Garden in the Featherstone Community Garden in Red Wing. This will allow those unable to garden in the traditional plots to enjoy all the health, mental health, nutritional and social benefits of gardening, while helping our pollinators and contributing a positive effect on our environment.

Volunteers Needed

Office assistance: (tele-commute friendly) coordinating schedules & calendar, letter writing, outreach, social media, research of funding sources, completing basic grant applications, creating and/or updating various Microsoft files, creating flyers and PowerPoint presentations, organizing email lists, coaching in updated software. It is not essential to be able to help with all of these tasks. Assisting with even one would be helpful. This is especially needed short-term, but can be ongoing in maintenance capacity if you are interested.

 Equipment & Materials Donations

  • Laptop or desktop with monitor, preferably with Windows installed
  • Printer, preferably with economical ink replacement
  • Windows Software
  • Microsoft Office software, preferably that can be used by voice writing letters, etc.

If Interested, please respond by email to

or phone 651-800-1118

Remember your very first day of school? It was like setting out on a new adventure, a journey that promised to be full of fascinating events.  The first day can also be frightening, intimidating and anxiety producing. However, thanks to all of you, local children will have their backpacks packed. You've taken a bit of the anxiety out of their lives and they are more prepared to begin in a good place.

Here is our wish for those  heading into school this fall, both learners and their teachers!
